The reason I asked is that I've just discovered that Vista defaults the USB setting in some Power Plans to disabled (my modem is connected via USB). It seems that these disabled power settings generate random disconnections from USB devices. I've made sure that my power settings are enabled, did a restart and set things running again.

I thought I'd cracked the problem, but after about 20 minutes my connection has just dropped out again. Damn! Back to the drawing board......
