Joy Be Had!!! I'm on the Internet on this laptop without being plugged into the modem/router for the first time!!!
Took it down to Reboot, in Bath, and they fixed it in a matter of minutes. Didn't even have to pay them (but I gave them a few quid out of etiquette.)
Turns out it wasn't corrupted, just two different adapters trying to deal with wireless (or something like that.)
So thanks to all who gave advice, much appreciated. I can now watch Youtube whilst sat on the toilet (if I should wish.) Or read Cable Forum whilst cleaning my teeth in the bathroom. Cool.
