If your computer is connecting wired to your modem, then it should also be able to connect wired to your router. Get a wired conection sorted first and worry about wireless later. You can't set the wireless connection options on the router untill wired is running and then you can log into the router via your internet explorer to check the SSID (network name) WAP (security settings) and the like.
Check your network connection (TCP/IP) properties are all set to auto on the computer. Equally your internet explorer should be set to auto detect, with dial a connection unchecked. Power off all the modem, router, computer. Make your new wired connections between all three, power modem and let settle, then router and let settle then computer.

Hey, thanks Rob and everyone who gave me suggestions, you know I asked this a while ago, but after failling to fix anything, I left it, untill now. I actually manage to set up a connection, using the VM easy set up.
Great, I thought, I have my wireless back!!! Yes, it was great, for all of about 30 seconds. Then lost connection. I clicked the flashing x symbol, and reentered my pass word, and again it found my neywork, and claimed I was connected. I tried accessing the internet, but it failled, and once again I lost connection. Tried turning off my firewall but no luck. Have done all the turning off modem/router for 30 seconds but to no avail. BTW this happened with my laptop connected to the router by an ethernet cable. So I'm back to running straight from the modem which works fine but is annoying as I have this free router which I can't use.
So I made
some frustrating progress, but, unless anyone can shed some light on what I may need to do, I'll phone up Support.
