I'd be very tempted to have a standard setup:
modem <> router
router <> server
router <> other computers
Just put the server in the DMZ area of the router's settings, and thus you won't have port forwarding, issues and everything else should behave without needing to worry about DHCP and stuff.

arrgh but in essencse that will do the same, as the Dmz will place that ip say 192.168.1.1, out of the routers firewall etc. so im still no better off having on this side of the router, but at least i wont have to set up dhcp, Might be worth an tinker with.
Ok lets say i do it this way, im still not going to be able to control the net given to the other devices/ pc's conected wirelessly.
