If you give your computer / server a fixed IP, using the network settings on the computer, outside of the normal allocation i.e 192.168.1.50, if it normally allocates in the range 192.168.1.100-150 then that IP will never change.

I'd be very tempted to have a standard setup:
modem <> router
router <> server
router <> other computers

Just put the server in the DMZ area of the router's settings, and thus you won't have port forwarding, issues and everything else should behave without needing to worry about DHCP and stuff.
