Yes the're VM boxes,some old NTL and Telewest ones as well as newer ones.I assume he's a contractor,surely a real VM employee would'nt take this kind of risk,would they?
As for recovering old boxes,I mentioned elswhere on here that I had a V+ box installed a few months back.The installer took my old one away with him.
Virgin hassled me for weeks and charged me Â£5 rental on the old one,insisting that I still had it,it's been resolved now,but what happened to my old box? Do they just get "lost"in the system,VM seemed to have no idea what had become of it.
