I think it might not even be that. A lot of hetro men feel (or claim to feel) sick at the thought of 2 men kissing or doing more. Whilst the above unfortunate individual wasn't doing anything like that, it's likely his knuckledragging killer made the association and acted on that.
In no way does that justify what happened of course. But could be another possible explanation.
