Tried that - I set up a playlist on iTunes with a subset of the music,
- clicked on my iPhone in "Devices"
- unclicked "sync only checked songs and videos"
- clicked "manually manage music and videos"
- clicked "Apply"
After clicking "Apply", I got the message
"
The iPhone "xxxxxxx's iPhone" is synced with another iTunes library. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?
An iPhone can only be synced with one iTunes library at a time. Erasing and syncing will replace the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTunes library."
I decided not to risk it.
