Mouse problems

My old mouse appeared to go on the blink (PS/2), so I put new batteries in my cordless mouse and that worked immediately. But I'm not happy with the cordless one, because it's a bit erratic and the scroll wheel doesn't work. I've tried several different mouse(s) including one I bought yesterday, and although they appear in the Device Manager, none of them work. I don't want to disable the cordless one, in case I can't get any of the others to work. Is it not possible to have more than one mouse working at the same time on the same pc?
