If you're uploading using MSN then you shouldn't need to open any ports.

MSN should establish an outbound connection through the router's firewall by itself, without any intervention.

Port forwarding/opening is normally only required for peer-to-peer applications, where multiple unknown hosts are trying to establish connections to you from outside the router's firewall.

The problem could just be the the router doesn't handle uploads well. How is it when uploading files through other mechanisms?
