Your normal TV ratio controls will not control HDMI which completely by-passes those

Some newer TV's can control HDMI/digital input

TCM show some very weird screen ratios - like 4:3 double-squashed - not just to 16:9 but huge black borders top/bottom (not left/right) so you end up with something like 23:7 which looks totally insane

i'm not quite sure what they're thinking about - i cant imagine anybody watching it like that
