Since the error message indicates a corrupt hive this may not be the answer. You may wish to try a repair from the XP console if the SFC does not work.

Great minds think alike! The chkdsk allowed Windows to boot. I'm running sfc /scannow now in normal Windows. It's hopefully just a bit of a mess left over from the viruses/trojans etc being removed.
