What happens in safe mode?
Safe mode works fine. You can use it all as normal.

I've tried reseating the memory and swapping it round etc.

In safe mode, it uses a generic software VGA driver so you're unlikely to see any errors related to the main driver in safe mode since it doesnt load at all.

What i'd do first is start up in safe mode and uninstall the driver. You can download a program called driver sweeper from Guru3d... make sure you delete all remnants of the driver and reboot... go back into safe mode, do it again just to make sure they've all been found and deleted, then you should be safe to boot up normally and install the VGA drivers once more.

Oh also, what manufacturer is your GPU from?
It's an NVidia GeForce MX 420. The issue happens as soon as you go into the profile now as I disabled startup items etc. Before it would load the desktop background then load a couple of items in the taskbar and blue screen, now it does it as soon as you click on the profile.
