Ah bummer it didn't last long

But yeah most likely the downstream policing failed for a little while, the speed you got is almost exactly the capacity of your cable area so most likely the kit at Virgin didn't police you briefly.

Maidenhead isn't a great test also - try http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk instead it's more reliable and has always been spot on for me from several ISPs, from Zen and Pipex right through to Be and Virgin.
