I've been having similar problems, can only seem to get a steady, consistent connection using a direct connection (after going through 3 routers this week).
Right after the connection goes down I checked the Event Log and got these error messages:

Tue Sep 23 13:28:13 2008 Critical (3) No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out
