Word 2003 Templates and Autonumbering

Autonumbering is supposed to be easy. So why can I never get it to work properly, expecially when another user is expected to edit a commonly created template?

I can create a master document. I can set up the autonumbering styles which in turn have a the paragraph indentation styling attached.

But when the next user comes to use the template (which was saved using the .dot format applicable to templates, not .doc) it appears that the user does not have access to the autonumbering profile.

Any idea how to get the autonumbering saved with the template so it will be loaded and opened by the new user?
