Wireless Speed Issues!

Chaps, A bit of guidance please. Been using a WNR834b with VM 20Mb/s BB for the last 10 months. Never had to do any speedtests as i was happy with pages loading and files downloading. Over the last fortnight the web has been utter pants....so started investigating more closely. Found that i was down to 1.2Mb/s and best case scenario about 2Mb/s. Aswell as this my connection was constantly dropping so was starting to get very p'd off. Once i had ruled out the VM connection, wired connections see's me at anything between 14 and 18Mb/s i started to investigate my router....seems with both my laptops the very best i can get is about 4Mb/s in ideal circumstances.

Last week the router (834B) wouldn't connect for more than five mins so in an act of desperation i went to PC world and bought an all in SMC router/USB pack .N spec for a measily 45 notes. Now the best i seem to get when using the wireless N adaptor with the SMC router is about 9Mb/s

So what my question is. For .G spec, rated at 54Mb/s is it reasonable to be only getting between 2-4Mb/s of true BB speed and for .N spec is it reasonable to be getting 9Mb/s of true speed? I never realised that either of these specs would in effect choke the BB to this extent.

What is the best performance seen with .G equipment (netgear) and intel 3945ABG internal card( in both a HP and a dell laptop).

Best Regards

Cavey
