Hmmm.

pc to modem works ok, so that hardware is good.

add router (and presumably a 2nd cable) no workee.

What I'd do in this situation is first try the pc to modem layout again with each cable in turn to prove they are both good. If that's OK then do a factory reset on the router so you have a known good state.
