TW oversubscribed and had a network that in some areas was falling apart, when the two companies merged most of the top brass changed to telewest people, that's why we have STM, because they dont want to pay to upgrade the network which they have oversubscribed, apparently because of debt issues, however it doesnt stop them giving each other huge bonuses every year.
VM only has multiple 40Gbit network link ups, BT has 100Gbit.
There is no need to shape on docsis3/FTTH providing you have good network link ups as to not cause congestion.
The only reason VM are shaping 50Mbit is due to the fact they simply dont have that kind of bandwith available.
50Mbit from VM is not a serious product, its a willy waving thing.
