i just set up a clean Vbox xpsp2 just to be sure, and posting from it right now as it happens

it should be simple assuming you set the USB2 options in that images config settings before you boot the image, then plug your usb device in, and windows doesnt get a look-in as the Vbox has control of the usb now.

just check the Vbox "Devices" "USB devices" and you should see your USB devices, for instance i can see the lads usb scanner and usb sticks etc.

settings/usb/ "Enable USB Controller" and "Enable USB 2.0 Controller" in the Vbox image of your choice should do it before you start it if not.

oh and its probably easyest to set a "shared folder" before you start as well to save and load any files
between the real and emulated OS images....network browsing can be a little flaky to setup ,so a share is easyer...

Nope it didn't work, the virtual machine is not detecting the device at all despite having USB enabled in virtualbox. I sorted it now anyway by using my inlaw's computer.
