Did you configure a fixed IP address on the desktop with the old router?
In a DOS window ('Start', 'Run', "cmd") type in
ipconfig /all
In the output, look for
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes

You could also compare the IP address with the one on the laptop - they should both be similar to each other and something like 192.168.1.100
