I may be mis-reading the original post, but if the internet works when the ethernet cable is plugged straight into the cable modem(bypasing the router), then that proves that the netwrok card is working and drivers are loaded. No idea why it's not showing in network connections though.

Tnx, you say you cousin can pick up the wireless signal on your router, and connect surf the net etc. I'd say it's something on your PC blocking DHCP requests/resposes. Do you have any firewalls set up on your PC, it's worth switching them off and trying again, maybe even worth booting to "safe mode with networking" just to make sure no element of your firewall is loaded.
