It can be dodgy to mess with the cable yourself. If the connection is poorly made, has a stray whisp of wire, etc then you can degrade your own and perhaps somebody elses service. Realistically the cable shouldn't be altered by the consumer, but Virgin Media's charge to send someone out and do it, is rather high.
The DIY connectors, especially the screw on type connectors are inadequate. The connectors VM use are all a crimp on type, I don't beleive these, or the tool to do the crimping are readily available in shops.
