I was in a similar situation earlier this year, was into the 2nd month of my 12 month contract when our landlord, decided to sell the property. Uber pain in the rectum time.
Got a quick move, but......the new flats where not cabled up, even though the street was.
First VM customer support, was just wanting me to stump up £250 notes or else. Was rather miffed at that response, especially if i had to pay 125 notes to BT.
One week later, BT said, the line is in, so all we have to do is enable it our end..so no charge...yipeee, Straight forward no probs.
Contacted VM again, to cancel and pay up my Cable contract, new person, then informed me, well you do know you can get Virgin ADSL on your new BT line. They then swapped my package over, NO CHARGE or cancelation fees

But they did state it is a new 12 month contract. I can live with that, as it saved me 250 notes. Even if i did stop my new contract it would be far less than, paying up my cable one.
So happy bunny time, that I saved money and kept some sort of internet access. Scartchy at times yes,so are most of the standard ADSL firms.
