It was part of her way of tackling the miners union which had become in her opinion too powerful and too militant. The coal being mined was uneconomic when compared to that which could be imported. Of course there's been a shift now with the price of oil, gas etc. so ironically the coal left in the ground which wasn't mined then is worth a lot more now. Having said that due to the way in which many pits were closed down it'll also cost a hell of a lot more to get out of the ground now. It always struck me as being shortsighted policy.
