I'd like to think you're right about the 'urban myth' aspect, although that last 1% could still cost you dearly.
I'd have no hesitation in trying to comfort someone in a situation like that or trying to divert traffic to keep him safe from further harm. However that would be my limit and would not include any sort of physical contact.
