That being said, why dont you use Wifi on the laptop?
For the laptop, the gateway is the router.
For the new desktop, the gateway is the laptop.

There is actually something wrong, maybe I didn't explain it clearly enough in my first post: because the network is unidentified, it does not save the settings, so every time I reboot, I need to set the network back to private again, and also file sharing between the computers is not working properly.

I already do use Wifi on the laptop, then use the laptop's ethernet port to share the internet connection to the desktop.
