I have at least been able to get access using that anonymiser link provided here which at least proves the sites are indeed as live as the host techie kept insisting to me they were (I was beginning to disbelieve him as I figured it had to be their problem not mine), but this thread throws out the prospect of it being down to VM.

I've not yet worked through some of the fixes given here, but hoping VM will sort it out their end instead - just wanted to let anyone else in the area know of my diffs.
