Probably not true (although that doesn't help). Given a good quality cable, Ethernet is designed to work with lengths of up to 100 metres. The standard specifies this. Given good conditions and excellent quality cable, it can go to 120 or 130 metres.
Even on cheap cables, I've seen Ethernet working over lengths of 20-30 metres.
