You could try taking it back to Tesco.
A DVD recorder should be expected to last for more than one year.
Although the warranty has expired, it is a
manufacturer's warranty and is in addition to your statutory rights as a consumer.
Your contract is with the retailer, not the manufacturer, & you have many handy rights against them under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended) & related legislation.
