No £75 is the standard charge for an engineers call and is the same if the work takes 20 minutes or 3 hours. You are paying for the engineers expertise, time, training, transport costs and parts he uses. This is a standard chage for all utility companies and I never hear complaints about british gas or electric companies charging the same.
As for the person that did not help you did you even consider prehaps they did not have any knowledge to help just as you did not have?
