Apparently the whole cellar was hidden behind a locked door in the bloke's workshop. Having said that, what I find strange is that 5 people were living upstairs and 4 downstairs. This means you've got a household of 9 rather than 5. You would think that it would be hard to hide the (grocery) shopping for the 4 people living downstairs from the mother. Also, a family of 4 will produce quite a bit of household waste. It just seems strange to me that one wouldn't notice that the volume going in and out of the house is extremely high. Still, we don't know how this family ran their household, so it's all rather speculative.
