I have tried the ntl 120 with a D-Link Router and a Bufallo Router.
Neither works, although the ntl works perfectly when connected directly to the ethernet port on the computer.
The Virgin Media 256 modem however worked first time withthe D-Link router.
Virgin will not replace your modem if you tell them it works with your computer, as they do not support wireless networking.
My advice is to tell them that your old modem no longer works at all, and they will supply you with a new one.
