Also why pay a lot of money for a Vista run laptop, and then spend more money installing XP, after all isn't Vista supposed to be the "one to have" operating system for the next few years. I don't seem to be the only one having problems, most of the review sites I have looked at don't give very positive findings showing Vista to be at least 8% slower than XP, SP1 hasn't improved it a great deal, and has in fact caused problems for some people. I have also had problems with updates, having lost dvd drive, this was sorted by Acer technical, and I am waiting to speak to them at the moment about present problem. Microsoft wanted Ã‚Â£40 + vat for the privilege.

Thanks Tightscot, I've run scan now, says 98% complete, found corrupt file, wasn't able to fix.
Details in cbs.log windir\logs\cbs\cbs.log. for example
c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log
