Apparently, it's for two reasons: One, if people are told when they are going to die, they will probably find a way to do it on time. Two, there are too many variables that cannot be accurately predicted.

While I don't doubt that Patrick has Pancreatic Cancer (and I feel sorry for him, his family and friends), I doubt that the doctors would have given an estimate.
Quite, On the Tv this morning they were saying that the doctors were considerably more optomistic than the timescale that the media have laid out.
