Understanding speed????

Though I would join the rest of disgruntled virgin customers who dont get the correct speed!!!!!! I am on the XL package which has 20mb broadband.
I have installed the tester which virgin advises Broadbandchoices.. and have over tha pasr 3 months have average speeds of no more than 8.7mb/s . Have contacted the technical service on several occassions to ask if i can get the speed that i'm paying for I have optimised the computer and replaced the modem but to no avail Yesterday i spent 20 mins with a so called expert who told me that running in safe mode would give me a better speed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I went along with him as we put comp into safe mode and when the speed was 7.4 mb/s he told me " YOU NOW GETTING GOOD SPEED AND RUNG OFF" what kind of bloody service is that!!!! I phoned virgin and spoke to anyone who would listen and waht was i told "WE HAVE NO SAY WHAT THE TECHNICAL DEPT DOES AND ONLY THEY CAN HELP WITH BROADBAND Just to finish of my rant can anyone tell me if the speed test is accurate?? Also i read in another thread that the only way to get the speed increased was to use an AMBIT 255 modem any help on these questions would be greatly appreciated
