Connection probs, setting up D-Link on VM

Hi there all, wonder if anyone could help me...

I am having serious problems connecting to the internet with the Router installed, I don't have much technical knowledge and am really struggling.
I have previously set-up an ADSL router on a line BT line which took all of 10mins, but this is something else lol.

I've looked on here to find any helpful information but it goes well above my head! If someone could explain it simply it would help me greatly.

The products i'm using are: 2 PC's, both with Windows SP2 OS and a D-Link router Model: DI-524 and Virgins own Modem

The connection is a Virgin Media Broadband Size: M, we receive a connection without problems when straight from modem to PC ( Via LAN ). If I get it working, I ultimately want to get my fathers and my own PC connected via cable, so there wont be any wireless connections but I cant even get my fathers PC to access the internet even though it says there is a connection

I have tried many different ways that have been explained.
I have tried the windows connection wizard in control panel which says unable to connect.
I have tried the D-link connection wizard from their website and selected 'Dynamic IP Address' (automatically configure) which shows the error message 'Error: Problems occurs on internet connection please start over your WAN settings'

I'm really stuck as to what i'm doing wrong and what next to try. If anyone could help me I would be very grateful

Thanks in advance Matt
