I tpersonally think the stop start nature of teh game is a massive attraction. Not just because it adds to the strategic element of the match, but it means that attneding a match is a (relatively) all day event. You probably need to go to a game to truly appreciate this.

I have friends who live in the States and they tell me that going to watch a game is an amazing experience. Big build up, barbeques and the like in the carparks, great atmosphere in the stands etc etc. I don't know how much of that is true, but the stop starting adds to the atmosphere, allowing viewers to catch their breath too.
