Revenge suggests malice, punishment is the consiquence of an action deemed illegal.
The punishment for the convicted to lose the freedom life gives them.
IE take their life, not torture them.

Think of it like this, you get caught speeding and are sentanced to pay £100 and take 3 points. Would it be ok for them to stamp on your foot as you pay?
