I don't know whether this is a significant issue since I've never got to work with SMTP and email services much, but afaik having email originating from an SMTP server associated with your domain can help prevent it being flagged as spam.

Basically lots of spam checking systems use scores for determining whether something is spam, and having an email originating from an SMTP server that doesn't match the domain can count toward that score.

Again I don't know whether it really is a significant issue, and it doesn't stop lots of people relaying email the way you're trying to do, I just got the impression from seeing this issue crop up a couple of times that it was best practice to relay email via an SMTP server associated with your domain.
