make sure that old router is infact a router and not a switch.

the difference is a router has an ip address and a CPU inside that as you might expect, routes the WAN side port traffic that connects to the VM-CM in your case, to and from the LAN ports on its LAN side that gives out valid LAN IPs to any connected devices you have connected for instance.

wereas as a switch is passive and has no CPU to run these apps, its for plugiing into a routers LAN ports and expanding these LAN side ports for adding more devices, common for older devices that have only 1 WAN port and 1 LAN side port for instance, tell us the exact model of router you have and we can tell you if it is infact a router or switch...
