Distance wise, I'd say about 6-8 metres from the house.
Looking at that, all you would need is a multi-core alarm cable, I would steer clear of the 'bell wire' route, it's a bit cowboy-ish A 4 core cable would be small enough diameter to go just about anywhere, available at most diy stores / electrical wholesalers etc etc, and not expensive.
