Steve Jobs did state that he did not think they would have the tech to achieve a good 3g battery life in the size of handset they want to manufacture till at least the back end of 2008.

I can see an iphone nano coming out before then.

That said I would have gone for a slightly larger handset with large hard drive and 3g if available as it would still have been thinner than my older xda mini s.
