Well, I followed that guide except that as I'm using a desktop & not interested in roaming I only had one network entry in /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf & I replaced the wpa-roam term in /etc/network/interfaces with wpa-conf.
Working perfectly on boot...
Edit - I also changed the driver to wext as I'm not using a madwifi chipset.
