I don't think my WRTG54 has ever crashed in the xxx amount of years I've had it. I guess the cheap and nasty type will due to overheating, some wireless network devices seem to produce a disproportionate amount of heat. Powerline would probably be a good solution here also to reduce the probability of your relatives having to reset anything bar the modem.
