That's a short-term fix but it won't solve the underlying problem.
Contact Virgin Media by email:
abuse@virginmedia.com. This is the address quoted in VM's Acceptable Use Policy. Tell them what you have been trying to do, and what message you have been getting back from Bigpond.
Re-send the message to them every 3 days until someone replies to you.
