First of all setup your connection wired between mode <> router <> one PC. For that you don't need wireless. Get the internet connection all working wired first. Once you are happy with that, you can use the wired connection between a PC and router to configure the router's wireless activities. Only then do you need a wireless adaptor for the PC(s) you intend to connect wirelessly.

Simply put by establishing your wired connection between PC via router to the boradband and internet you'll know the router is speaking to the modem correctly. You'll also be able to use your internet browser to access the router's control panel.
