Thanks for all the quick replies. However, I'm not as tech minded as all of you seem to be and I have no experience of wireless etc having simply used a VM supplied ethernet cable modem and only had one PC.
Now I'm a bit lost.
What would I need to enact the setup described in original post, and would having the upstairs pc connected by homeplug and/or router degrade performance, specifically for gaming?
Or should I go for having the main connection put to the location where I want to do the gaming, and let the kids do their bit of light surfing etc downstairs on a secondary connection.

I have BT broadband with a sync speed of 8128kps down 448kps up my pc is connecting to a voyager 2110 router through a pair of Comtrend UPA adaptors at the moment (i was using my zyxel homeplugs till a few days ago)
I bought the homeplugs because i found wireless unstable for gaming, there are a lot of wireless LANs around and a burst of noise would kill the ping completely and result in a lot of packet loss and jitter.
With a pair powerline adaptors (be that the homeplugs or the Upa ones) i get a ping of about 5ms to the router.
I have little or no errors on my line so I'm able to use Adsl fastpath (interleaving off) which also helps my ping.
See =
http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/interleaving.htm for what interleaving does and why it affects pings
As a result I can often ping under 20ms to UK based gaming servers (depending on internet traffic conditions and what other people in the house are doing)
I do believe if you have more than 2 adaptors the latency does increase slightly. (probably because there's more traffic on the homeplug link + they'd have to make sure they know which one to send the data to)
Anyway in summery
If your absolutely obsessed with your Ping then you want Interleaving off and direct cat5 wired to your router.
If your not to worried then homeplug should work fine.
I would expect with the added latency of the homeplugs and even with interleaving on you should easily be able to get pings below 60ms to uk servers.
