re-installing a fresh firmware being the case then and seeing exactly the same results, it looks like its toast in some way then, as you say taking the router out of the chain, your connection works.........

you might still try finding and installing a newer official firmware or a 3rd party one and see were that gets you, but its not looking good from what you tell us.
