Have you tried
Envy? Worked a charm for the Nvidia driver recently on mine and supports ATI drivers to. You might need to drop out of X first to remove the drivers and reinstall from scratch though. (This falls under the heading if nastiness that puts people off Linux we were discussing on the other thread
)
